The Chinese legend of the “Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate” tells of carp that swim upstream against the river’s current to reach a waterfall called the Dragon Gate.
Those that successfully leap over the waterfall transform into powerful dragons. This myth symbolizes perseverance, overcoming challenges, and achieving great success or transformation. Here at the TWGym it represents success in achieving higher levels in your Kung Fu training.
Students in our Junior Kung Fu class start their training as ‘Jin Li’ (Golden Carp.) Like the fish from the story above they must show perseverance and overcome challenges in their Kung Fu training to achieve great success. The journey is not easy but with patience and guidance from the instructors the student can reach high levels. Some even gain the title of ‘You Long’ (Dragon) meaning they have mastered their basic training and begin learning the advance techniques and applications.
Classes are full of fun and games designed around improving the students concentration, coordination and confidence.
Our Qi Gong warmup focuses on flexibility, mobility and general wellbeing so the student begins to understand what their bodies can do.
The emphasis on physical training strengthens their bodies. Not only to achieve higher levels in Kung Fu but also offers cross training for their other sports and activities.

Martial Morality
In an effort to better ourselves and our training we focus on ten ideas called Martial Moralities. The five moralities of action have to do with how we treat other people, the five moralities of mind have to do with how we treat ourselves. We encourage the young students to learn about these concepts and discuss them with their friends and family. At each level of training they will be tested to see if they understand these moralities.
''The classes are fun but educational at the same time. You don't spend the whole time practicing or going over the same motion over and over, and the classes are taught in a way that keeps you interested and engaged, while also having fun and actually learning. The classes have helped me to learn not only how to defend myself, but also helped me learn to focus, how to set my mind on a goal and not give up, and to recognise the difference between confidence and arrogance. The instructor is amazing. He is patient with everyone, and kind, he gives corrections not criticism and helps you to learn and understand not only what we are doing but why it is important.''
